Every year in business teaches you something new and after six years as a photographer, I can confidently say that most of the things that truly move the needle aren’t the things I obsessed over in the beginning. If I were starting my photography business today, these are the exact things I’d do differently and the strategies I’d prioritize from day one.

When I started, I poured all my energy into branding, preset hunting, logos, and trying to make my feed look perfect. But clarity beats aesthetic every single time.
If I were starting again, I’d focus on:
Beautiful work matters, but clear messaging is what books clients. The faster you define it, the faster you grow.
Your future self will THANK you for this one.
If I had to restart:
Systems create consistency, save time, and make you look professional long before you feel like one.
If I were starting today, I’d stop posting only when I had a session. I’d build a content strategy based on:
Consistent content builds trust and speeds up the booking process, clients arrive feeling like they already know you.
This is where my Unraveled feature comes in. I was just featured on their blog post of Unraveled Artist of the year blog feature is here
I spent the first few years of business thinking I had to “do it alone.”
Wrong. This week, I was featured in the Unraveled Academy blog, and what hit me hardest was that this happened because I’ve finally leaned into community, sharing, growing, connecting, and learning alongside others.
Six years into business, and being part of a creative community still fuels me creatively and strategically.
If I were starting over, I’d plug into community sooner, not for validation, but for support, education, and longevity.

Clients don’t remember your lens.
They remember:
If I restarted today, I’d pour way more energy into the experience instead of thinking a new lens would fix everything.
Like many new photographers, I underpriced myself out of fear.
If I could start again, I’d set prices that reflect:
And I’d raise them before burnout forced me to. Understanding your time is value. Time away from family and things you prioritize in your daily life is worth money you receive from clients. You should value that when figuring out the price of your business.
If I could start again, I’d track:
Not likes, saves, or followers.
These numbers give you clarity, stability, and strategy, and they guide healthier decisions long term.
Instead of offering “just sessions,” I’d build a business model that creates repeat clients:
This creates long-term sustainability instead of relying on one-off bookings.

Six years in, the things that matter most are strategy, community, and experience, not perfection, not gear, not trends. My recent feature in the Unraveled Academy blog is a full-circle moment that reminds me how far I’ve come, and how differently I’d build everything if I were starting today.
If you want a photography business that grows year after year, start with clarity, systems, community, and the confidence to charge your worth.
I offer seasonal workshops and my next one is offered for June 6th in Cape May NJ. Come along and feel supported in your photography journey and growth!!
